IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
HOW TO FIND SLATE FARM
Slate Farm, Hall Farmyard, North Clifton, Newark, Notts. NG23 7AZ
We are based just North of North Clifton village on the A1133 (Gainsborough Road). If you are travelling towards Gainsborough, we are on the right-hand side at the top of the North Clifton dip. If you are heading towards Newark we are on the left before you get to the dip!

Once you arrive, please head down the drive towards the house (through the open wooden
gates) – bear right towards the woods keeping the sheds on your right-hand side and park in the designated spots near the gate. The area will be clearly sign posted.
PLEASE GIVE WAY TO TRAFFIC ENTERING THE YARD FROM THE ROAD - it is a working farmyard and we are only able to do what we do due to the very kind permission of the lovely farmer.
WHAT TO WEAR IN THE WILDERNESS
To keep your children as comfortable, warm, dry and as scratch-free as possible, we ask you to provide the following clothing (weather dependent):
• Sturdy trainers, walking boots, snowshoes or wellington boots – please no crocs (even in off-road mode) or sandals.
• Long trousers & long sleeves. (This is at your discretion but the children will be climbing trees, leaping logs and running around… the wood is left as natural as possible so inevitably they will come into contact with stinging nettles and brambles – long sleeves and trousers offer some protection from stings and scratches)
• Waterproof jackets and trousers (if available) to be brought to each session
• Adequate layering to suit the seasons; thermals recommended for the winter months
• Gloves, hats, thermal socks and scarves for the winter months
• Sunhats/caps for the summer months
• A hair bobble for longer hair (which should be tied back please)
• Sun cream for your child to apply themselves (or for you to apply for them just before the start of the session)
Please be mindful that there might be biting insects in the woods at certain times of the year (especially from May to October). We therefore suggest you supply your child with insect repellent that they can apply themselves (or that you apply for them just before the start of the session).
WHAT YOUR CHILD SHOULD BRING
We will provide most of the things your child(ren) will need to get the most out of their time in the woods but there are a few things that they will need to bring from home too:
- Packed lunch & any snacks they might like during the day. (We would appreciate it if pack ups could contain as little packaging as possible, so we lessen the chances of accidental littering.)
- Refillable drinks bottle – we will have orange squash, Ribena and water available for the children to refill their bottles with.
- If your children have a toy or comforter that they are very attached to, please feel that you can send them with it. We can’t take responsibility if the toys wander off and get lost, but we really don’t want the children to feel lost if
they come without them!

WOODLAND RULES
Whilst we don’t have many hard and fast rules, we do have some boundaries – both
physical and philosophical.
We would appreciate it if you could go through these with your children before you arrive on site – we will also talk through them all prior to the sessions starting.
LISTEN carefully to the forest school leaders – we are here to keep everyone safe.
🐛 RESPECT each other, your surroundings and nature.
🌲 Don’t LEAVE the woods without an adult.
🦉 If you need help because you are hurt, shout “MEDIC” at the top of your voice. Please don’t shout help – we won’t know whether you need help tying your lace or because you are hurt!
🔥 FIRE SAFETY is hugely important – don’t enter the fire circle without an adult present.
If you hear three short whistles while you are in the wood, it signals an uncontrolled fire, stop what you are doing, find the nearest adult and leave the wood quickly but safely. There is a fire assembly point clearly sign posted close to Slate House, you will gather there for a
register. Do not re-enter the woods until you are told by a leader that it is safe to do so.
🐌 Most importantly - be CURIOUS and BRAVE. Try new things and if you struggle at first, keep going – we promise you will get there in the end.
WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL BE DOING WHILE THEY ARE WITH US IN THE WOODS
We plan unforgettable, action-packed days designed to encourage your wildlings to unwind, unplug and explore their own incredible imaginations…
At Slate Farm Wilderness Holiday Club, children are free to explore, create, and connect with nature through hands-on experiences designed to inspire curiosity and build confidence.
Each day is an adventure in itself, filled with a wide range of fun and engaging activities that will keep your child active, learning, and smiling from start to finish.
We have included a selection of the below over the two days so if your child is with us for both days, they won’t be doing the same thing twice!
🌲 WOODLAND CRAFTS & POTTERY
Children will use natural materials to create beautiful forest art and hand-crafted pottery—
perfect for sparking creativity and taking a little piece of the forest home.
🪢 KNOT TYING & DEN BUILDING
From mastering basic knots to constructing woodland dens, children will develop practical
outdoor skills while working together as a team.
🔥 FIRE BUILDING & MARSHMALLOW TOASTING
Under close supervision, children will learn how to safely build and light a campfire—the
highlight of which, of course, is toasting marshmallows over the flames!
🪵 STICK WHITTLING & TOOL USE
With expert guidance, children will be introduced to safe whittling techniques and get
hands-on experience using tools, empowering them to shape sticks into something special.
📓 NATURE JOURNALLING AND BUG IDENTIFYING
From sketching leaves and recording wildlife sightings to identifying bugs up close, children
will deepen their appreciation for the natural world through observation and discovery.
🌿 FOREST EXPLORING & SCAVENGER HUNTING
Our woodland is full of hidden treasures! Children will explore, track, and collect as they
take part in exciting scavenger hunts and immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of
the forest.
🌳 TYRE & ROPE SWINGING and FREE PLAY
We believe in the power of unstructured time outdoors - kids will swing, climb, laugh, and
play freely, with space to be themselves in a safe and supportive environment.
With every activity carefully designed to nurture resilience, spark imagination, and build a deeper connection to nature, your child will leave not just with muddy knees, but memories that last a lifetime too.
